There is a possibility I will be late tomorrow night as Caroline is commuting for the first time so I need to be home until she's back and everything is sorted. Please start without me and I will get there as soon as I can.

An excellent evening again with Digger's best chilli yet and some excellent planning and execution of an ambush. I felt that we really played to our strengths there and enjoyed taking the Drow down. Good fun all round.

We had a ton of fun as always. Sorry you couldn't make it. Things I learned include miners are very thirsty, and rangers don't react well to poisoned arrows.

You can say that again, those poison arrows were seriously nasty stuff - even after making my saving-throw I still took something like 25 points of poison damage, which was then recurring over 3 successive rounds. Needless to say Rogar was not amused, and gave the traitorous cook a good thrashing until he ran away like a big sissy girl!!

Chaps, the latest write up from Steve B - Enjoy!

Chapter 3

Present : Drak and Rogar.

With the rest of the party still nursing hangovers and absent Rogar and Drak decided to continue on their journey. However with Rogar still injured it was necessary to rest up for a day or so before continuing their journey.

After a short trek a cave is found and using some of the wood found nearby a fire lit and strips of goat cooked. In fact there was not much goat to share between the two of them and it was necessary to eke out the contents along with the dried rations.

Drak suggested that they collect the body in the morning cook and he carries it to use as food, this seems a reasonable suggestion but Rogar and the party conscious found it unacceptable although Drak reckoned they might regret the decision in the future and even offered to cook the meat for them. The offer was declined.

The day passes peacefully, as does the following night.

The following morning it was decided that the miners might search for the body and wonder why it had been left in the open, instead Drak and Rogar fetch the body and cover their tracks leading to the body, they then travel to the site of the minotaur battle and dump the remains over the cliff to land with the minotaur’s. About half a day is spent clearing up the kill site, covering the tracks and blood, Drak then chops the body up with his halberd disguising the wounds on it to appear as Minotaur weapons rather than sword cuts. At the Minotaur battle site all tracks other than the Minotaur are covered up and Rogar uses his expertise to make it appear as though the cook was killed by the Minotaur’s. The duo then returns to the cave and eat more goat and some dried rations.

Settling down for the night with Rogar taking the first watch of about six hours each, night passes peacefully. Although Drak did scare Rogar out of his skin by waking him up vigorously in the morning.

In the morning and nearly recovered they decide to continue on up into the mountains Rogar leading the way with Drak following a few feet behind. Drak watches both the rear and the path ahead over the shorter human. As they climb the temperature drops slowly and marching is almost pleasant. Overhead eagles scream their calls marking their territory between themselves and hunting small wildlife, the party spy some small mountain deer, but they do not come close enough to be shot and are clearly wary of human contact. Drak and Rogar slowly climb towards the north and Yatton, the path wending its way along the contours and ever climbing.

The pathway appears to be wending it way up the mountains, finding the easiest route following the contours, there are no tracks of the minotaur’s here, in fact there are no tracks whatsoever on the windswept man made road, every so often a small shelter has been hollowed out of the mountain and there are more numerous passing places as wagons clearly made the trip years ago.

As the sun is slowly setting in the late afternoon in the distance the flare of a reflection gains the duo’s attention, concerned for themselves they duck back and try to see what it is that has drawn their gaze. Whilst Drak struggles to make it out in the distance Rogar declares that it is a large metal object, possibly a dome that is causing the effect, it’s larger than a small object though and is probably a building, possibly even Yatton itself as it is so far away. The shining arse cheek as it is known up north where they heap scorn and ridicule open the southern religions becomes clearly as the pair march closer during the remainder of the day.

Late afternoon we spot a metal dome in the distance. We are 2-3 days march away from the dome, it’s the temple dome of Yatton. The shining arsecheek as it is known amongst the peoples of the north who heap scorn and ridicule upon the southern religious practices.

Very few caves around, we look for a clearing or at least somewhere to stay.

In the morning we need to be careful not to reflect sunlight on our weapons from the rising sun. No tracks and spoor around the area so we MAY be safe from things.

We do notice that as we approach the snowline that we see the occasional drift of snow. This is the only water we have found for a while. As we approach we get to see a better and better view of the temple. Only a single dome there, it is a silvery colour. The mountain is granite but the temple is made out of sandstone. In the evening we try to find a camp, and discuss how we can approach the place.

The last piece is a large ramp (like massada), with walls on one side that there is a 1000ft drop. The temple is on the side of the mountain and appears to be at least 200 metres across.

After a brief discussion we decide that the adventure is futile and return down the road out of sight of the temple. Comtemplating the futility of our existence we jump off the edge of the cliff. The spark of inspiration that often comes to those seeking the end finally arrives (adrenalin does wonders for the mind). Drak grabs Rogar who uses a series of feather fall charges from some item, three in total and we gently float down to the bottom of the gorge and land in the cold wet stream.

We find a boulder to camp on in the centre of the river, it is relatively dry and we camp spending a reasonable night under the dark folds of the cliff sides. The night passes without any disturbances and glad to be alive we emerge from our blankets as dawn lightens the sky. Shotly after the inky blackness rises and we are able to view our surroundings, light would have been unwise as it might have been visible the previous night. The water is fast running and about three to four inches deep, the sounds dampen anything else as it echoes repeatedly off the steep sides and in fact when separated by a mere ten feet we cannot even hear each other speak.

Safe at the bottom we plan climb up the stream bed and find either the escape route or the well which we believe must be located down here, if not we face a long walk down the mountains with no magic to fly up the steep inaccessible cliff sides.

After walking up stream for a while we decide to bed down for a nights rest, the days here are shorter because of the lack of night and traversing the stream difficult in the darkness. Rogar takes first watch whilst after midnight Drax takes it. The night passes easily, difficult to sleep and in the morning a dipper comes down the stream bed, it appears to be feeding on the stream and is unlikely to be a familiar.

Rogar tries to cast animal friendship on the dipper. And succeeds on casting and making a friend with it. The dipper says chirrup, Rogar makes a chirrup and it comes towards us for food, Rogar continues to do this during the day and it is trained by the end of the day to feed from Rogar. Drak luckily decides the dipper is cute and not worthy of a mouthful.

Occasionally we are forced into the line of sight of the temple and rush across these open spaces, however as we approach nearer to the base of the temple we are soon out of its sight for most of the time. We slip up the river. After about midmorning we come to a very deep pool. Including some reasonable sized fish down there. Drax tries to harpoon a fish, has three attempts and harpoons one on the second attempt, it’s quite tasty. Uncle Henry dies speared from above by the white shaft.

We approach the last one of the open spaces in direct line of sight of the temple in the early afternoon. We hold back and camp up for the night. We settle down to camp and in the morning get ready to go forward across the open. The open area ahead is quite flat as the stream opens out, beyond this there is an overhang. There, we might be able to camp safely out of sight from the temple in relatively safety and relatively dry.

We decide to march across the open area, there are no pools to hamper us and we reach the overhang. It is 12 feet in diameter. The ideal campsite, warily Drax steps into the cavemouth, either it’s a mouth of a huge monster or a nice safe cave, Drax doubts the latter whilst Rogar has no fear (and no clue) . Suddenly the trapper enwraps Drax in its folds, aargh. With Drax stabbing with his new dagger (he had entered the “cave” prepared for such an eventuality as a sword or halberd would have been useless in the circumstances) and Rogar hackins it with his sword expertly avoiding hitting Drax the trapper is destroyed. We find 3 copper pieces within the trappers treasure, clearly there are not many passers-by here.

There is no treasure of note under the monster, however beyond it is a small passageway leading into the rock. It’s manmade and water can be heard at the end of it. The passage way goes into the rock and slopes upwards for us. We get to the edge and here water falling. We are in a large underground chamber. We are in a large chamber with a waterfall and various bore holes coming into the central chamber, this is the sewage system. Now, rather than using the bore hole it exits out the pool at the bottom. Into the deep fish pool further down the valley. There are stairs further up the wall on the far side which we can reach. However the likelihood is that the stairs are trapped somehow, possibly with magic. The stairs spiral towards two shuts, probably the waste disposal unit of the complex above, one of the two tunnels near the top appears to be magically trapped, whilst the other does not, although it would be difficult to reach that one. We don’t approach too close as we do not have much magic available to us.

Having searched a little below, Rogar remembers that he can cast a little magic and we determine that the slime filled stairs have no traps, magical at least. We clear the stairs of slime and find that someone has come down here to search but reached the stairs and failed to go further. We search the bottom of the water fall. Rogar finds nothing behind the waterfall despite Drax rubbing him firmly against every wall, in the belief that humans or half elves, or maybe rangers get to sense these kinds of things. The duo search the rest of the cavern and find nothing.

We climb the stairs again and Rogar casts detect magic again, facing away from the borehole so his voice doesn’t carry. He then turns around and detects magic in the borehole with the footsteps.

Finally we settle down for the night and wait for reinforcements.

Gents, enclosed the latest chapter of the AD&D diary - Enjoy!

Chapter 4 : Beneath the temple

Nestled within the cave beneath the temple Tramathar, Drax, Rogar and Brother Armitage plot how to surprise the drow and Minotaur’s.

Tramathar considers his choices either dispelling the glyph or flying up with a rope to allow people to climb up into the pipe with sewage flowing out of it, whilst Brother Armitage wakes up. He emerges, fresh as if from a sleep of ages, Ripvanwinkel style. His beard has grown to an enormous length with luckily he manages to wrap around himself to keep out the chillness of the mountain air.

Drax recounts the adventures of the last few days for the sleepy duo whilst Tramathar contemplates matters to himself. Tramathar works out that the glyph is recast when they switch over the chutes.

Brother Armitage intelligently decides to create water to wash away the glyphs whilst erase seems risky with a 35% chance of setting off the glyph with the caster of the erase spell affected. Brother Armitage flushes the pipe creates 24 gallons of water that flushes down the pipe. The water flows down the pipe flushing the pipe, the magical glyph has gone from the entrance of the pipe Tramathar casts a detect magic and reveals that the trap has gone.

Drax reminds the group that the drow needs to be taken out first with no mistakes; we decide to cover ourselves in Minotaur faeces.

Going up the corridor we notice it narrows and is shaped like a diamond. After twenty minutes of varying gradients, we come to a bend beyond which is light. Detect magic is cast and another glyph, an explosive glyph is detected. This would make a noise and damage those passing under it. Tramathar casts a dispel magic at the glyph and it blinks out. The light is actually coming from a set of six circular holes, the toilet seats. Below these are piles of Minotaur shit. We are not sure whether there are drow faeces there rather than Minotaur faeces.

We contemplate whether a lightning bolt up the drow arse would kill him outright; the question is whether he would use this crapper. Rogar is allowed to fly invisibly up to the toilet seat and beyond!

The toilets are outside, as the light beyond the holes is natural daylight, whether within or without the complex we eagerly wait for Rogar’s return below.

Rogar emerges into an open courtyard, a gate into the temple to the right and a gate outside the battlements which surround the area. Opposite is another row of six toilets. Rogar slowly lifts the toilet seat, as it opens some diarrhoea dribbles onto his shoulder. The walls surrounding the area are solid rock, Rogar can see at least two Minotaur’s walking the battlements. The outer gate is wood, the inner gate is guarded by a single minotaur and are made of stone. Basically the toilets are located in the barbican.

Rogar studies the dome, it appears to be made of silver and being the greedy ranger that he is he decides to waste more power from his god (or whoever gives him power) and hides his scent from himself and the minotaur’s. On the other side the barbican is replicated with the toilets as well. Similarly there are two guards on both sides in the battlements and a door guard.

Rogar eventually returns revealing the layout of the temple. Rogar returns. Tramathar casts invisibility and Rogar casts pass without trace on him. He sneeks out the toilet and casts a clairvoyance through the wall, it reveals a corridor travelling deep inside the walls, travelling around the circumference of the building. There appears to be no doors either side within sixty feet of the point in the corridor he emerges. He then flies to the top and then casts clairvoyance downwards. In the centre of the room is a central block with bas relief figures on each side of the block. There are also lit braziers and arcades of columns leading from four doors from each point of the compass. There is a dark skinned figure standing on the floor of square stones, red is predominant but there are red and black stones, he is casting identify on each of these stones, he is halfway through the stones, casting identify on each one. There are also several minotaurs around, the drow appears to be annoyed because he has clearly been casting the same spell for months to locate the gem!

We head back downstairs to the bottom to make camp, posting a watch. The following morning, the night passes quietly. Tramathar casts fly on each person and invisibility 10’ radius with pass without trace cast by brother Armitage and Rogar. Tramathar then casts Leomunds Tiny Hut to protect us from the winds. In the morning the drow hasn’t arrived, a waste of a clairvoyance to discover this. We wait, cold until lunchtime to see whether the drow has arrived.

Blessed, with protection spells, invisible and unscented. Drax drops on top of the drow and severally wounds him stunning the dark elf in the process and but also hitting his head at the same time and stunning himself as badly.

Tramathar and Rogar drop like stones whereas Brother Armitage floats down casting sanctuary as he falls.

The minotaur’s react slowly, Drax pins the drow and Tramathar then stabs him, not killing him, the drow tries to cast a spell, teleport but Rogar stabs him just before he completes the spell, destroying it, Drax was unable to disrupt the casting by rolling on him in a manner that would the drow have been female, been suggestive. The minotaur’s then rush in to attack us, We are all hacked badly. The drow is killed by Tramathar with his blade, Armitage with Cause critical wounds and Rogar finishes him off with a final stab. The minotaur’s attack again, there are eight of them attacking us and more coming. With the drow defeated we start attacking the minotaur’s, however the fight is not going that well, with most of us severely wounded we take stock of our choices.

An excellent session last night, perhaps our toughest but most rewarding match ever? I thought we worked really well as a team and got the result we deserved. They had a couple of good shots on goal but...oh...sorry, wrong write up.

Anyway, really enjoyed it. Thanks.

I agree with Renny - that was great session with what proved to be an almighty smackdown between the PCs and Minotaurs....although it was certainly touch-and-go at one point with Rogar cut down to 2 hit-points!! Thankfully he was eventually able to triumph over his nemesis 'Cheryl the Minotaur' with a very cathartic triple-damage slice-and-dice manoeuvre that left his opponent obliterated from the face of the earth leaving nothing more then a very fine spray of blood to show that she ever existed - (yeah that showed her....Lol)
