AD&D - Be there or be square!
"The rough stone passageway slopes downwards and ahead of you comes the faint sound of scratching. The torch you carry gutters momentarily as a foul stenched blast of air envelopes you!"
The scratching gets louder, louder and louder . . . . . . . the sound of many claws on stone!"
What are you going to do next?
Find out more on Wednesday, 6th May 2009 @ 19:30 at Digger's Place!!

Thanks for a fun game, Digger, in which I got to wade through crap, kill some rats that were already dead and get killed by another thing that was already dead and then come back to life again (me, not it). Whew. Hopefully we'll have some reinforcements next time.

Re: Digger's AD&D
Great stuff Digger in what proved to be a very action-packed and eventful encounter in the sewers of Waterdeep.
During this session the brave hearted (but skint and in need of money) adventurers Rogar (thats me) and Tramarthar (Steve) gratefully accepted a well-paid job to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a number of engineers and guards, who had ventured down into the sewers of Waterdeep....and never returned.
As we explored the upper levels, via a maze of tunnels and sluice gates, we soon ran into trouble courtesy of a scourge of skeletal rats, (approx 10 in number). Thankfully these were relatively easy prey (although our weapons only did half-damage), and we comfortably despatched our foes within a few rounds of combat. Of course when playing Digger's games it never pays to get too comfortable, and sure enough something far worse was lurking nearby - none other then our missing engineers and guards - who had been killed and turned into a horde of Zombies (x10).
I cant recall the last time I had the opportunity to chop-down some zombies but I think its fair to say that we were both shocked at how whoop-arse these buggers can be. Not only did each zombie have something like 50 hit points each, worse still was the full horror of their clawed-attacks. If one of these should successfully strike you (then after taking initial claw-damage), then the poor unfortunate would then have to make a Save vs Paralyzation roll to avoid being infected by some form of affliction. I was caught right in the thick of it and certainly rode my luck a few times during this combat-session, but inevitably one of their number eventually managed to strike home and I failed my saving throw. The consequences of this were that I then had to roll 1D6 to determine my fate. Digger made it clear that if we rolled a 6 then we would DIE and be turned into a Zombie ourselves (so no pressure then). Sweating like my life was on the line (which it was), I rolled a 2 - which meant that I was struck down with a randomly generated disease. So Digger turned to me and (clearly enjoying himself at my obvious discomfort) invited me to roll 1D20 to find out what type of disease had befallen me - whilst also helpfully pointing out that a roll of either a 19 or 20 would mean that I had contracted a FATAL disease. And what would you know.....I then went and rolled a 20!! Bugger!
Ok, you can stop laughing guys, this is serious, (well ok, I was laughing my arse off too - what else could I do?). As my very life-flashed before me, Digger gravely imparted the bad news. This fatal disease would apparently kick in after 1 turn (10 mins game-time) and then after that I would lose 1 point of strength (permanently) every hour, until eventually rendered a crippled invalid....oh and would also die after 4 months too. Cursing my bad luck, I bravely fought on knowing that I had quite literally minutes to save my arse..........
Now if you thought that was bad, just wait til you hear what happened to Tramarthar. Having cast Haste, upon himself he was valiantly hacking away at these Zombie's too, only to also fall upon the same fate as me when a Zombie fluked a roll of 20. Failing his subsequent saving throw, Steve then rolled the magic D6 to see what fate would befall him......And for what its worth I shouted some words of encouragement ("Dont roll a 6 or you'll DIE!"), which I think on reflection was probably the worst thing you can do to jinx a roll. So when that fatal 6 then popped up, I think its fair to say that Steve was probably contemplating a quick trip to the bathroom. Yes, Im not shitting you here......Tramathar tragically DIED..... ....well he died for a few seconds anyway..........because in true Monty Python fashion he then got better just like that peasant in The Holy Grail who got turned into a newt. You see, thankfully for Tramarthar he had been wearing the Amulet of Leng which has some uber regenerative properties that immediately kicked in and brought him straight back to life again (but at the cost of the amulet of course).
Now you'd have thought he'd learnt his lesson, but one round later and Tramathar was hit again by a Zombie, and again he failed his saving throw. Thankfully second-time around (with no amulet to save him), he rolled a 4 and contracted a Contagion instead (as per the spell effects of the same name), which would threaten to sap him of his strenth, dex, and charisma!! (yikes)
As both our diseases could only be cured with a Cure Disease spell (which neither of us had), we unleashed merry-hell upon those remaining Zombies over the next 8 rounds, (its funny how motivating a fatal disease can be), and Tramarthar also let loose a spell that disintegrated most of our remaining foes. Having defeated the Zombies and bagged their gold we unsurprisingly decided to peg-it back to the surface and run straight to the nearest temple. The priests there were only too happy to cure us.......for a price. - and so we ended the gaming session cured from our afflictions, but skint again. Thankfully there are plenty more areas of the sewers still left to explore, and it'll provide an ideal opportunity to earn more money so if anyone fancies joining us both for the next encounter please come along. Its 5 Gold pieces per day (which is pretty good pay in todays economic climate) and there's plenty of foes to hack and slash too, (just remember to avoid the Zombies). My personal preference for fellow adventurers would be persons of the clerical disposition - (preferably with Cure Disease spells on their person), so come along and join in the fun....You know you want to!!!

Gents (And hopefully Ladies),
Just a quick reminder that we are playing once again next week at mine on Wednesday (27th).
Be there or become a small square of acidic jelly!

Re: Digger's AD&D
Thoroughly enjoyed last night's game again and fortunately our numbers were somewhat boosted by the arrival of friends old and new.
The wise Canon Fodder provided sage advice and much needed healing, while Necryssa (I think) and unnamed cleric/fighter played by Julie both brought much to the group. I'm sure Chris will deliver his usual novel sized writeup soon but in a nutshell we re-entered the sewers having pushed the price for the job up a bit (quite a bit).
This time we carried on further into the sewers, bumping heads with another group of zombies as soon as we accessed the next wing of the sewer complex. Things went better this time although a couple of us still took some nasty wounds before the remaining shambling monstrosities were turned away. Having followed them, we found three trapped in a pit trap, which Necryssa narrowly avoided falling into.
We quickly dispatched them with some flaming oil but realised we were two short. As if on cue, the remaining two walking corpses appeared behind us. Tramathar quickly wounded both with a blast from the lightning wand but got a little carried away and decided to follow that up with a fireball. This wounded the creatures further but also managed to wound most of the party, nearly finishing off Julie's character. He did feel bad though.....
Having reset the pit trap, we were then rushed by a group of eight skeletal warriors. Acting quickly, various spells of protection and haste were cast on the group and Canon Fodder placed a wall of iron between the front three and the rest of the group to allow us to whittle the enemy down a bit. Julie had cast invisibilty from evil on herself and slipped past the warriors unseen before the wall was raised. Exploring further down the corridor, she found evidence of some kind of fireball trap. Meanwhile, the rest of the party managed to dispatch the first three warriors while the remaining fiends raged impotently behind the barricade placed in their way.
And that's pretty much where we left off. As a survivor of the great Waterdeep massacre from last time, I can say that it was a big relief to have more hands on deck this time around. Enjoyed the game and Digger's excellent hosting as always.

What a great evenings entertainment - Remember Digger - Never let the party have access to a poisoner's kit EVER again!
Quickest way to dispatch high level MU - feed him a strong laxative and then cut his head off when he is otherwise engaged - Nice!

Re: Digger's AD&D
So, having rid the caravan of the bandit threat, the party's next move was to deal with the Castellan, Snivel (that's pronounced SNY-VELL) ensconced in his lofty keep. Ideas were batted around until it was decided that it would make sense to infiltrate the fortress disguised as bandit recruits. Sending the caravan on it's way, the party offered to deliver the treacherous cook into the hands of the law. The chef had other ideas, taking his own life with a poison capsule, whilst warning the band that they would never get the gem! Seizing the opportunity, the party realised that they could use the cook's collection of noxious potions to gain the upper hand against the Castellan. They travelled quickly to the village, using cantrips en route and clothing taken from the bandits to change their appearance on the way. On arrival, the team went to the inn where they discovered a merchant gorging himself and another team of adventurers who introduced themselves as Reve Stace, Bris Courne, Beve Stooks and Peidi Haine. The other group were also intending to join the Castellan's band. Engaging in conversation, Tramathar learned that the merchant had brought supplies for the keep and was having them delivered the very next day. A plan began to form...

Tramathar flattered the merchant and offered the services of the party to deliver the supplies. The merchant agreed and while he carried on eating, a conversation was struck up with the other group in which it was learned that they were also delivering supplies to the keep. Tramathar implied payment for this service and the other team angrily demanded payment as well. After some to-ing and fro-ing, the harassed merchant agreed to pay both teams. The party then offered to keep watch on the food through the night, giving them access to add some added flavour to the beer and win without being observed. The next day, the other party left to deliver the supplies while Tramathar, Rogar and Fodder rested.
Arriving at the keep the following morning, the party found a keep which was less than impregnable. All around were guards being violently ill while trying to maintain their posts. The party were hurriedly ushered into the Castellan's presence, who was, in his current state, less than threatening. Nevertheless, his suspicions were raised and he called for his guards before being swiftly dispatched by the party. Killing some of the Castellan's guard, the ministrations of the Canon soon bought the other militia into line, leaving the party free to attempt to breach Snivel's chambers. After a swift reconnaisance in wraithform by Tramathar, the party realised that they would need to use the Castellan's braclet to avoid the dimension gate trap on the door. After retrieving some minor items and potions, Tramathar let Fodder enter the room. The Canon opened a magical chest at the foot of the Castellan's bed and unwittingly unleashed a fierce demon apparently summoned by the recently deceased Snivel!!

Thanks Steve,
Much appreciated, I know how frustrating it can be when you're ready to go with the adventure and then plans change at the last minute.
Lets hope that next time we are all present, but asking you to take on a Type V demon would not have been fair.
Anyway I enjoyed the magic, even if the hiss-meister destroyed us in the first game - Hissssssssssssss
See you all soon we we get back to the game.
