Digger's AD&D - Page 2 Empty Re: Digger's AD&D

Post by kevinrolfe 11th October 2009, 06:18

Shortly after we made camp we heard them, the noise was unmistakable...Gribblings. Sword and Spell were set, and they came hundreds of them screaming towards us, fire and spells held them for but a moment it was going to be a long night.

In the dark, silence, the noise had stopped something big was coming, the ring of fire was burning off the fuel at a rate of knots something big, something bad, something wicked this way came, we may not survive this.

The fire held, it moved with a grace, to dark, to shadowed to see, it moved just beneath the flame and skulked into the river. run, run get away form the edge but the fool didn't listen, something wet happened to one of the sailors a gaping maw of death dragged him below, the boson panicked and ran towards the aft of the boat to release the mooring. Something bad was about to happen. he ran to boat up the gang plank to save the ship, to the Boson to stop him, punch's kicks and a headlock before Boson was dropped down into the dark of the hold. The boat swung into the river as we watched the gangplank sink below the water.

With much heaving and hoeing we managed to secure the boat, at which point a rather audacious plan was hatched. We were going to ground what we took for a croc and kill it. We set tarpaulin against boat and shore and using some Dead Gibblings as bait we lured it in. time passed and it bit, carefully we drew it closer to the make shift trap luring it to its doom, the creature raised itself on the tarp to feed and it was no mere Croc it was a Snake the beast was twice the size of the boat, a monster by any standards, no time to think just act. the spells cast and calming from the Ranger, we made a pact with the beast aid us protect us and we shall feed you the sweet meat of the hairy beasts, we took a deep breath then we understood, it agreed.

Ther rest of the voyage was smoother by day we sailed and by night we captured Gribblings to feed to our protector, 3 Gribblings ment we could sleep safely, swarms of the screaming beasts would come then scatter when Sid (for we had named him that) came, some of the best nights sleep we have ever had.

We agreed to let Sid go by tying a Gribbling to a floating create which we watched float slowly down stream, we said our good bye’s to Sid.

The port we arrived at was the arse end of nowhere, the villages had webbed hands and feet, of that I am sure. Still needs must. We stayed the night then left the following morning to the mountain pass and to our destination… to be continued

in the mountains we stood, we held, against tooth and claw, the wolfs came at us again and again, but still we held, then as quickly as it started it ended, the wolfs skulked back into the night.

we continued a short way when we came across a cave entrance, the hobbit and the two female members of the party recklessly forged ahead into the cave to plunder it, whilst the true heroes kept watch outside.

I have yet to question the hobbit and the girls as to what happened inside as we were too busy outside fighting Trolls, the first was hard to dispatch the second was made of butter. Good fight, good times

Outside the cave the brave warriors were slaughtering Trolls; one of the Trolls being hacked down with a mightly blow doing 80+ points of damage from the Ranger (watch him strut for the rest of the week now!).

Meanwhile, on the inside the two female party members were squabbling (which consisted of stabbing each other with pencils) over the contents of a huge chest they had found, although the thief had narrowly avoided being poisoned thanks to the quick actions of 'Tuttle' the Hobbit in applying a torniquet!

When two of the trolls came in to the cave the ladies promptly hid and went invisible whilst poor 'Tuttle' got thrown into a sack and sat on by a very upset Troll, who had noticed his chest had been rifled through!

At which point our adventurous heroines sneaked out of the cave leaving the Hobbit to his fate.

Thankfully 'Tuttle' was quick witted enough to stab the sitting troll in the rear and make his escape, at which point the cleric sealed the cave entrance with Troll inside with a stone meld spell!

And with that the party moves ever onwards and into the Black Mountains - Home of the Black Orc Clan!!

Yeah just watch me strut my stuff now. Who-Da-Man? Yep thats me - Rogar Trollslayer they now call me.

That single mighty blow was magnificent - my finest moment in the campaign so far!!! I recall sitting there beforehand staring at my dice thinking wouldnt it be great just this once if I could roll x2 20's for quad-damage. A fools dream I thought, and so couldnt believe my eyes when it then qucikly came true and exceeded my expectations with two successive 20's and a roll of 15 for Quintuple Damage. Rolling my damage-dice i rolled 2 + 16 (damage bonus) for 18 points of damage which was then multiplied by 5, to give that Troll a mighty blow for 90 points of damage, (yep you heard that right 90 POINTS!!!). There's no doubt about it I was Awesome!!!

Digger's AD&D - Page 2 Empty Re: Digger's AD&D

Post by rogartheranger 27th January 2010, 12:50

Thanks for another very entertaining AD&D session Mr Gardner!!!

In an unusual twist to what might be expected in a typical game of AD&D, this session instead featured several 'unusual' incidents which I have recounted below for your amusement , (although admitedly one of these is complete bullshit - but can you guess which one it is??? Lol):-

1) The gaming session kicked off with the PCs searching the trolls lair for treasure (see previous session for further details) only to find the shrivelled remains of Flintly's manhood which the trolls had variously been using as either a tooth-pick, nail file, or bait for their fishing line to catch small fish!!! Laughing

2) Later, in a potentially dangerous set-up to a thrilling combat scene, Rogar had to negotiate for sleeping accomodation (in a cave) with a fearsome....errr....Skunk, (grrr). After much growling between them in "Skunkeese" (it wasnt happy that I kept poking its nest with my sword - snigger), and some edge of your seat spell-casting, we eventually avoided kicking up a stink ( Rolling Eyes ), by agreeing to an uneasy truce whereby we kept to our end of the cave and the skunks kept to theirs - (exciting stuff indeed);

3) Not to be overshadowed, mystery and intrigue later kept us thrilled as we debated the mysterious origin of some large eggs that were found buried in the snow near our campsite!! (ooer). Having convinced ourselves that these probably originated from either a giant snake or a snow spider, we braced ourselves for an exciting end-of-session cliffhanger in which the DM revealed that the frozen eggs were in fact.....(drum-roll please...... Shocked )........just ordinary harmless eggs that had been left buried in the snow by some passing bird (d'oh!).

4) During our quest to find the mountain giants, Canonfoder devised a cunning plan to protect our campsite from any nearby snakes and snow-spiders by building a snowman!!! Yep thats right - not one to waste valuable magic points with protection spells and alarms, we instead built a snowman and entrusted it with the safety of our camp whilst we all got a good nights sleep. Sleep Clearly the relative merits of this plan have yet to reach their full potential as we haven't found any proof of snow-spiders or snakes in the mountains but lets not write this one off quite yet. If you suspend your disbelief it could very well turn out be a superb piece of lateral thinking that will save the party next time round.....Then again it could just be a completely barmy idea from a character whose mind has clearly snapped after spending too much time being tortured by a demon in a hell-dimension. I'll let you decide which !!! Suspect

Look forward to sharing more fun with you all next time round!!!!

Digger's AD&D - Page 2 Empty Re: Digger's AD&D

Post by rogartheranger 31st March 2010, 12:40

Great session last night Mr Gardner. Here's my write-up of the last two sessions for those who missed out on some significant developments:-

Starting with a quick resume on the story so far from our gaming session on 9th March....Following the defeat of the giants and the acquisition of their treasure, the party returned to the Miners camp to trade and acquire directions to the Orc’s lair. Setting off again they followed the directions provided which led them across the harsh rocky terrain to the remnants of an Orc battleground (a shrine in honour of an alliance that was forged recently between the White and Black Hand tribes) and eventually into a cavern leading into the Black Mountains. Not far from the entrance was a trading-post manned by a friendly Orc called Mr Skaggs. Mr Skaggs belonged to the Black Hand tribe and was more than happy to trade with the Party in return for a letter of introduction that we could take to the Black Hand Chieftain - Melgrim. The plan was to gain an audience with Melgrim and offer him some of our much prized cheese and gold in return for safe passage to the King of the Orcs (who belongs to the Red Hand Tribe), whence we could then try and bluff our way in under the pretence of being traders so that we could relieve him of the fabled weapon ‘Orcs Death’. Sounds simple enough....except for once slight snag.

This 'snag', emerged following a friendly chat over dinner with Mr Skaggs and his wife (yes, we made a great impression with the Skaggs family), in which he revealed to us that the King of the Orcs was none other than our arch nemesis Greldak! The second problem, was that Greldak now had power over the Red Dragon whom he was using to consolidate his rule over the dissenting White and Black Hand tribes. The source of Greldak’s power over the Red Dragon was also none other than ‘Orcs Death’ itself! It was then that the proverbial penny dropped as we realised that the name ‘Orcs Death’ was actually an anagram of the word ‘Draco Seth’ – which translates as ‘Dragons Death’ which was the true name of the weapon!!!!! An intriguing possibility now presented itself – if we could somehow acquire ‘Dragons Death’ from Greldak, just how grateful would the Red Dragon be for securing its freedom?? Grateful enough perhaps to unleash a terrible vengeance upon Greldak and the Red Hand Orcs which could really help turn the tide in our favour??

Undeterred from the difficult odds we now faced, the Party pressed on into the mountains with the assistance of one of Mr Skaggs sons who was to act as our guide through the tunnels. We were warned not to leave the path due to the many dangers (some very dark and terrible) that lurked beneath the maze of passageways, - and at first we all heeded this advice very carefully. ...Until that is we awoke the following day to find that our faithful Orc guide had mysteriously vanished. Deducing that he had probably scurried off to find us some food, we followed his trail off the pathway (the stupid idiot) into a passageway lined with many store-rooms. The trail from our Orc guide led into one of these rooms (which happened to be stacked full of crates of food) and ended up at a hole in the wall into which he must have crawled to investigate something....and never returned.......It didn’t take a genius to deduce that he had probably been eaten by something and we certainly weren’t naive enough to follow him in. We therefore finished the gaming-session lost in the mountains without a guide or our Letter of Introduction, and with absolutely no clue as to how to find our way to the Black Hand Orc chieftain???? Oh Bugger!! affraid

Picking up the session on 30th March, the Party decided to tentatively investigate some of the other ‘store rooms’ lining the passageway. Our initial caution proved well founded as we luckily avoided any initial threats from such creatures as Germaline until we found ourselves staring into a room filled with an impenetrable veil of darkness. Casting continual light on his staff, Kevin's Cleric ventured forwards to find himself standing inside the Orcish equivalent of a library which was stacked full of potions, books, and scrolls. Casting detect magic, he was amazed to find that we had hit the jackpot big time as nearly everything we saw radiated magical energies!!! The Orcs had presumably raided some poor wizard and stashed his stuff inside this room many years ago and long since forgotten about them. Boldly trying on one of the many rings lying around, Kevin found that he chanced upon a Ring of Invisibility. Unable to resist the temptation to rifle through the many goodies lying around (including a magical sword) Rogar then rushed in to join his colleague and in doing so forgot that golden rule of gaming...”When something is too good to be true, it usually always is”... BANG...at which point the doors slammed shut and we were plunged into magical darkness.

Unable to see anything around us, the only sound we could now hear was a dripping noise which was followed by the sizzle of something burning. Casting Continual Light again, we illuminated the room to find that the doors had vanished and that the walls of the library were now dripping with acid which was now slowly filling the floor and corroding the soles of our boots. With horror Kevin deduced that we had stumbled into an illusionary room which was actually a Mimic, within which we were now standing in its digestive juices. Rogar attempted to strike the ‘walls’ of their prison but only provoked a shard of darts that erupted every-time he struck at the creature. Kevin meanwhile plunged a dagger into the ground and cast heat metal on the blade to help entice the Mimic into letting us go. Rogar then used some of his flasks of Lime to neutralise the acid and buy the Party some time to think of a quicker way out of our quandary. The cunning solution devised by Kevin was to cast Plane Shift on the Mimic and thereby banish our host to some random location in the mountains, leaving us left in the remnants of an empty room....And in case you’re wondering the ring of invisibility was an illusion too along with all the potions and books we had found earlier.

Undaunted by this experience we pressed onwards towards a great stairwell which led down deep into the mountains (imagine the great stairway in the mines of Moria and you’ll get the idea). As we moved carefully down, some of steps crumbled and collapsed into the yawning chasm behind us leaving us with no choice but the press on. These great chunks of masonry tumbled down into the depths with an almighty crash which surely put paid to any notion we had of a stealthy journey through the mountains. As if in answer to the cacophony of fallen stairwell, there emerged a distant sound of drum beats many miles below us. As fear gripped the Party we decided to abandon our journey down in favour of casting Air Walk so that we could fly up to some of the upper levels that were accessible within this network of tunnels. Unfortunately each alternative route we attempted was blocked off by fallen masonry and warning signs written in Orcish to ward off travellers from taking these routes. Left with no choice but to return to the collapsed stairwell, we ventured down into a large round room which appeared to act as a kind of hub-point to numerous passageways which branched off from this location, (all leading up). Within the centre of this room, was a great stairwell leading down into the depths – a stairwell that had been boarded up again by the Orcs with warning signs of some unnamed danger. Feeling brave (or foolhardy) we removed the boarded-up warning signs and decided to venture down!!!! (Crazy I know but then I reminded everyone that “Fortune favours the bold”, to which our DM then retorted that “Fools go where angels fear to tread”, Lol).

As we ventured down we found that this stairwell was exceptionally well-crafted (clearly by the Dwarves) and lined with gold plated torch holders, and gold inlayed walls. There was also beautifully inscribed calligraphy (graffiti) on the walls from the Dwarves miners indicating that this stairwell was intended to link up to some of the gold-mines deep beneath the mountains. What we found instead was even more momentous....The deeper the stairwell went the more humid the temperature became and we were aware of a radiating glow beneath us which indicated that something hot like molten magma awaited us. Kevin cast ‘protection from fire’ upon the party as a precaution and we continued down into a cavern that overlooked a large pool of molten lava. Along the walls were strewn the scrawls of an ancient language that we couldn’t decipher which were possibly left by some ancient Dwarven tribe? Cleverly deducing though that perhaps this location had some sort of religious significance, Rogar threw a gold-coin into the pool of magma to see if anything would be disturbed or summoned?

As soon as the coin dropped into the bubbling pool, something appeared to briefly ripple across the surface momentarily, enough to give us a clear indication that we were thinking along the right lines. Checking through his backpack again, Rogar recalled that he had in his possession a golden statuette which had been crafted by the Dwarfs as an offering to one of their Gods, which he decided to throw into the pool as an offering to whatever ancient powers lay dormant here. Moments after absorbing the golden offering, a giant column of lava suddenly erupted from the pool which quickly solidified into a giant stone fist. Centred within this stone-fist was a glinting statuette in the shape of a Dears Head – This, Rogar realised, was in fact none other than one of the Shield Gems we had been seeking!!!! (Who’da man!!)

At this point a loud roaring noise filled the air high up above us – something had been disturbed and was mightily pissed off that we had managed to retrieve the shield gem. Running back up the stairwell we found a reception committee awaiting us in the form of 4 Minotaur’s!!! It was at this point that Rogar recalled that the Shield Gem of ‘Lightning Bolt’ was supposed to be guarded within the stronghold of the Minotaurs of Yatem which was clearly where we had accidentally stumbled upon. (A nagging thought at the back of his mind also brought up the recollection that the Drow were supposed to be in this area looking for this very shield gem). Using a scroll to cast a ‘wall of daggers’, to cover their escape route, the party ran for their lives away from the Minotaurs and up one of the unguarded stairwells – which unfortunately led us straight into a face-to-face confrontation with a 5th Minotaur that had been lying in wait to ambush us. Rogar bravely fought the beast single handedly but took a serious beating for his efforts due to a combination of formidable attacks unleashed upon him. Thankfully the Cleric was on hand to offer Rogar some magical assistance in the form of a ‘Cure Serious Wounds’ spell, which then spurred on the Ranger to vanquish his foe after 5 rounds of combat and thereby enable their continued retreat from the reprisals of the other Minotaurs which were by now hot on our heels..... Very Happy
