The Dog: There is some confusion over the inclusion of a dog called Bandit, in the Eagles Lineup. It is true that a Cu Sidhe or "Black Dog" took part in the assault on Caer Sidi, strong hold of the Black Druid, in the Otherworld. But there was never a Superhero dog in the actual line up, one presumes the press simple took this, "Black Dog" (The Gurt or Girt dog from Somerset) and named it Bandit, for the sale of more news print.

There is no record of why the dog was there.
(Bandit the Wonder dog was a direct rip off of a Mike Collins creation so we want to distance ourselfs from this hence..)

6100 BC, raring through the upper atmosphere above the south pole a gigantic ball of fire crashed in to the sea close to what will eventually be called Norway. the Vikings thought this was the begining of Ragnarok.

1955, The Eagles on Wave Sweepe, Lughs ship, track Loki back to a tanker off the Coast of Norway. As the dove deep in to the sea to avoid Lokis pulse weapon they picked up a strange signel. after they dispatched Loki, John Bull and the Eagles retunr to the depths where the discoverd a Space ship half sunken in the silt of the undersea mud slide is hade created.
after about a year of clearing and moving the Eagles had floated the craft off the coast of Anthrax island, the empty craft became the Eagles Nest.

1960 The Norwegens discover the Storegga Slide, the orgininal crash site of the Eagles Nest.

Need to flesh out the discovery a bit, what do you think. The Storegga Slide is a perfect crash site.

Nice idea. Not sure it quite 'hangs' at the moment. Are the Eagles state sponsered? I can't see the Government letting them keep one of the most important discoveries of the age and using it as a base. It wouldn't be hard to justify, but on the face of it it seems unlikely. Why go to the trouble of moving a huge structure (underwater!) in the first place? Why not just use it where it is? If you do go with the idea it needs to be much bigger and far more developed IMHO into the teams background/setting. Perhaps the ship's computer is still online and they use its vast knowledge (problems there...) and sensors to assist the team. Maybe the ship's AI wasn't destroyed in the crash and it has been gradually repairing itself by filtering minerals from the surrounding silt and sea water (a tedious slow process that has taken thousands of years) What happens when it is fixed? Is it the source of the strange ghostly presence that is sometimes felt; the feeling of someone/something being 'there', that gave rise to the myth that the base was haunted? Laughable I know... Will somebody come looking for it? Will it take off and leave? After all it has been unattended for almost half a century.

I agree. It's a cool notion but doesn't make a lot of sense, especially in the context of the times ie 1950's. It's hard to imagine a British Government post war having the funds and the will to carry out such a massive technological exercise, purely for the purpose of giving the EAGLE's a base, when they would have plenty of huts lying around after the war.
If the EAGLEs are not sponsored by HM Government, then did they as a team have the resources to move this themselves? Would make more sense if you had the Alien craft crash in the ocean near Anthrax Island and the EAGLEs investigate, then finding it empty, simply refit it for their purpose. That makes more sense to me in light of the times when this was happening.

John Douglas/Black Sun is just a filler for a news feed in part 3 of Peking Duck.

Other complications.
It is possible that any Villains who escaped the restaurant could turn up to try and take on the PC’s again at Craig’s flat after following them there MR SMASH would be ideal for a round two fight in the top floor of a tower block. The villains will attack after the PC’s discover the newspaper clipping.

The Villains will not have a plan; they simply want revenge for the restaurant fight. They were all due bonus’s if they succeed in kidnapping Tony Tate, the PC’s have caused them to lose out and they are unhappy. During this fight as the PC begin to win the TV should come on and a BBC News24 reporter should be heard to say
‘...Has been named as John Douglas, scientists suggest that the large Hadron Collider will take18 months to repair, in other news the Finance Ministers from all of the G20 countries arrived in Britain today for a summit meeting at picturesque Farnsworth Hall in Kent.' (Picture cuts to view of large black limousines arriving at the Hall through a crowd of anti-capitalist protestors, and disgorging smiling politicians.) 'The main topic on the agenda is likely to be the state of the Global recovery’

its an off hand comment.

or was you talking about the cast list.

Opps

This is a basic draft of Story Arc 2: An Alien Exchange

Prologue
1880’s
They said that the chances of anything coming from Mars, was very, very low. But, In the late 19th Century The British Empire was attacked by being from another world, from Mars. The attack was short and deadly, it is now almost forgotten, a foot note to history, the authorised history of the attack has become little more than s story. In our modern world the idea of Martians attacking Victorian Britain is relegated to a myth. But it did happen.

1890’s
Maverick English scientist actually invents a crude for on anti-gravity and manages to fly to the moon, he never returned, the companion did return, and the Empire learnt of the anti-gravity compound and were determined to harness its power. After initial testing, a second trip was planned. But without the inventor, to help, what was created was but a poor substitute. So on June 30th at around 6:30 the Craft was launched into the air.

Instead of going straight up it curved and sped towards Russia where, at 7:14 am 1908 it crashed near the Pdkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, the explosion would be heard for miles around. This would later be called the Tunguska event.
The craft disintegrated leaving no trace. Just before the first investigators arrived something crawled from the crater. It is unclear who or what this was. Except that the peasant boy who saw this happen, said the man flew away.

It is unclear who or what the peasant boy saw, the craft was unmanned. A telegram was sent to the Moscow office to send a team to Tunguska to investigate in.

1900 1950
Before the “Black” series of projects became the UK’s Space Program, the UK had a very secret space program headed up the Genius scientist know as the Clockwork Ouroboros, (the brain in a jar who in 1933 helped created the British Interplanetary Society.) the program had two missions to launch a secret space station and create a method of attacking Mars. The Clockwork Ouroboros competed both by 1946. And Space Station Alpha was put into orbit on the dark side of the moon. A cloaking device would be added in 49. As for Mars, that covered under Project Thunderchild II. The compound is still used to launch supply mission to the secret base and is simply called ZIRCON.
SSA has been used to meet and greet visiting Aliens; it has almost become an unofficial immigration centre. The Clockwork Ouroboros allowed a linkup from SSA to the Eagles nest in 57’ to act as a secondary defence protocol. The program still operates but has been almost forgotten about by the Government.

1950 – Present day
The “Black” series of rockets moved the UK in to the Rocket age. It is a more open space program, in cooperation with NASA and ESA. It was almost cancelled in 1971 but was saved by an intervention from the Clockwork Ouroboros how met with the PM. No record of the meeting was ever kept but funding was resumed and increased

23 January 1974
The Berwyn Mountains in Llandrillo, Merionethshire, North Wales, “Questor” a Boluscan Archaeologist, begins the first of 7 trips to Earth to study its ancient history.

Yesterday
A small interstellar Yacht warps into the solar system, it carry’s M’Krell, Princess of High Illana and she is on her way to stop a war, A three-way confrontation between Illana, the Krai Empire and the Emissariate of Bolusci has ended in stalemate: a stale¬mate that should to be broken when M'krell bonds with Torus the Meg of Bolusci. The Illanians have arranged to meet represen¬tatives from the Meg's Star Guard in this out of the way system to arrange the truce, the site of this meeting is Space Station Alpha.
Instead of a Star Guard Corvette, as promised, the Illanian truce-ship is met by a fully armed Krai Battle Cruiser! Realising, the hopelessness of his position, the Yacht’s Captain orders his men to fight to the last and suggests that M'krell put on her Royal Space Armour and prepare to abandon ship, before SSA can get a message to earth its primary communications systems are fried by the Krai, the secondary systems kick in ad a short message is sent to the Eagles Nest.
The last we see of the brave Illanians is a burst of energy as they are annihilated by disruptor fire from the Krai Battle Cruiser.

Fragments of her ship were also drawn into the earth's gravitational field. Most burnt up in the atmosphere but four of the largest and most important fragments reached the ground in one piece. These have been scattered throughout the globe.
Illanian ships are not built according to any technology that earthmen would understand. They are grown in vast seas of semi-sentient fluids. They are crystalline, indescribably beautiful and alive. The energy matrices laced throughout the ships act as independent minds which are sensitive to the desires of the ship's controllers.
The four shards of M'krell's yacht are no longer beautiful, hav¬ing been worn to smooth stones by their passage to earth. They are, however, still alive and seek to use the natives of this planet to reunite them, rescue M'krell and rebuild the ship so that it can return to lllana.
8:00 am Today
Earth, a day later, in the Eagles Nest the rolling news channels radio and a number of web sites feed a large amount of data in the base, monitored on a 24 hour rotor the heroes watch to see if they are needed. Some of the storys that have been on the rolling news
1. The Portsmouth is about to be graced by a visit from Lola Novanna, the beautiful star of numerous small-budget Rom-Com films. She is expected to open the newly refurbished Film Museum later today. You will remember the devastation attack on the Museum by the Super Villain calling himself Nightmare Man last year.
2. A bear which has escaped from London Zoo is still on the loose. Official sources believe that it is no longer in the city and have extended the search to the surrounding country¬side. A spokesperson for the Zoological society said that the animal could be dangerous if not approached by a trained zoo-keeper.
3. Russian sources deny claims that they are developing super-powered agents to operate in the west. Dr Grinsky Oborski, one Russia’s foremost biological scientists, yesterday stated that all research into improving the human condition undertaken is merely to counteract Western advances in this area, and to help the Russian Olympic effort ready for 2012
4. Astronomers say that the bright light seen in the skies last night was probably a meteorite breaking up in the atmosphere and that the shooting star seen shortly after¬wards was probably a piece of the debris burning up.
5. The super villain group calling themselves “The Fraternity” has been broken out of the Maximum security Prison HM Belmarsh. London Mayor Johnson was not available for comment.
Only two of these stories are relevant to the Superheroes but you should read each out with equal weighting and be pre¬pared to expand upon the details given here if the players ask. Additionally, you should feel free to add more news stories, possibly to set up the introduction for future scenarios of your own design. A good source of typical stories to pad out the list is a local newspaper or a TV news bulletin.
It has been XXX weeks since the Nest was rediscovered; the Nest has been repairing itself for days. Most systems are back on line, however, since the data purges some are take some time, but at 8:00 AM the Early warning link with SSA in switched on and an Alarm sounds.
The Eagles left a protocol book; in it is an explanation to each alarm and system the base has. The team used this to contact the UK government to take Overlord away and to announce themselves and the New Eagles. It is to this book they must turn to understand just what this alarm is. The book states that they should contact The Space Centre on the Isle of white and speak to the Clockwork Ouroboros. The computer will be unable to contact the Space centre, the Heroes must make their way to the Isle of White.
As the team get closer to the Isle of White they will fly over Portsmouth where a loud battle is taking place. If the PC decide to ignore the battle then a stray shot will shoot down there Helicopter
Next Week
The ship's defence mechanism will be found by a head-hunting tribe in South America. Drawn by its inner glow, they took it back to their village and placed it in their sacred spring. The witchdoctor and the tribe's three champions drank of the spring and absorbed some of the substance of the shard and fell under its influence. Through their minds, the shard perceived itself as G'ru, sister to the mountains. It began to plan its return to space, but for this it needed its brothers and they were too far away for the primitive tribesmen to acquire.
One Month after that
Then, one day, the head-hunters managed to capture a rare delicacy — a British explorer and gentleman of fortune by the name of Wesley Fetherington. He was dragged to the sacred spring and forced to drink. Seeing the stone in its depths, he grabbed it and used it to lay about the natives, killing several before G'ru's influence finally put him in thrall. Using his knowledge as an explorer and ex-soldier, Fetherington has set out with G'ru and the tribe's champions to recover the other three shards and reunite them.

A few quick thoughts.

Is the material prior to the 'yesterday' entry relevant to the current or a future story arc? The scenario works without that material just as well and it feels a little needless to me; not really adding much to the setting but creating problems such as Mars invades the Earth but nobody really remembers the fact. Shocked

I still think if we had a working anti-grav compound we would be selling it and making a fortune. You need to rationalize why this chemical is not being used by everyone. If we had it why wasn't it used in the World Wars?

Why would the SSA become some sort of space UN or neutral ground? Why would alien races even be interested in our planet, let alone migrate here?

Why have two space programs (one cavorite and the other conventional). If anti-grav works why use rockets? Why create a space station on the dark side of the moon and keep it secret? Great Britain could have had manned space station a decade before the other powers even got a dog in space. Why put a space station there in the first place?

Also how was all this accomplished? Where did the resources and finance come from? Putting a space station into orbit just after the end of WWII seems problematic. We were not even able to support our own war effort during that time. Rationing didn't end tell the late fifties(?) and Britain was massively in debt after the war. I just don't see how it could have been done - even in a superhero universe. If it was done surely it would have been geared to securing victory over the Axis, not sitting on the far side of moon. (Unless there was an even bigger threat that made the Nazis look petty bullies.)

Just curious.

Post by kevinrolfe 11th February 2011, 18:18

Some of the stuff is relivent pre yesterday, and some just adds some historic depth. this is a setup for a book end adventure, Crossfire and reunion which take place a couple of moths apart. ill refine this more later. story arc 2 is not totally inplace yet so still a WIP.

There is a sub plot in which Chameleon is a Martian, he would like the Tachyon bomb to use in the 2012 olympics to destroy earth. there is another possibilty that Mars is hollow and an eternal battle between the EMpire and the Martioan has been raging for 100 years.
As for resources, there is more depth to these notes in the History of section explaining some of this in detail

this one really is a first attempt at the prologue. Anyway thanks for the rational. i will review and revise the draft.

i is very handy to get this kind of feed back. it will add to the final product,

I think the cavorite and the martians are problematic elements that need to be thought through carefully as they would create profound changes to history of the world if they actually existed. There needs to an explanation of how the world was altered because of them, or a reason why it wasn't changed at all.

This goes for much of the new material you are writing. There's no reason why those ideas can't work, but there should be a logical reason (even if it is comic book logic) for them to be and the implications thought through; either how things were changed or why they were not.

Cavorite is used in "the balance of Power" SquadronUK adventure. and the Martian stuff is still a WIP the copywrite is up so is fair game.a

As the book develops more the logic can be ironed out and in.

Not trying to do a watchmen However tempting. but little changes around the edges, could work. all these are to be treated as a sliding scale, for the GM to use or discard as they wish.

once you have gone through the inital draft of story arc 1 i can build in any changes. i have already made some major structual changes to the Prologue, putting it in date order.

1938/9 Neuschwabenland (New Swabia)
The Third Reich build a secret Base calling it Base 211. Towards the end of the war the Nazi’s sent a vast amount of manpower and technology, in the belief they could rebuild. It had also become a stopping of point to South America.
Communication had continued up in till Operation Taberlan in late 45’, when John Bull and a detachment of SAS sealed the base. Since late 45’ the radio was silence.

1945, Pilcomayo, Bolivia.
As part of the Canaris-Vril “Z-Plan” (Zukunft, or Future Plan) an SS Lebensborn outpost was set up in the mountains by a devout Nazi Wolfgang Mueller the self styled Reich master.
It was here in 67 that Klaus Kammler (sometimes calling himself Klaus Steinbeck), was born. The Nurses in the Lebensborn had insisted he was to be called Kammler, the records for the Lebensborn were destroyed when in late 85’ the base was attacked by Super Heroes.

1950 -1960 Great Britain
In the early years of the Nuclear age, following a dramatic rise in the number of super powered individuals (both heroes and villains), the Government formed an association of the most trustworthy super-powered law enforcers they could find. These selected heroes were supplied with all the funds and equipment that they needed in their fight against crime.
The Extra-normal Association of Government Law Enforcers, or EAGLES as they came to be known, was active in the late 1950s and early 1960s. So successful were they in their fight against evil that by 1963 super powered crime had almost ceased to exist. Those Super criminals who were not reported dead were either behind bars or forced into exile in distant lands. The EAGLES were recognised as heroes throughout the civilised world and were soon elevated to the ranks of the most decorated individuals in history. The names of these stalwart saviours of mankind were soon synonymous with all that stood for good in the human race.
Then, one day in 1964, the legend of the EAGLES came to an abrupt end. The regular radio reports from their super-secret base ceased and, as the world tensely waited, The US launched its secret U2 Planes to watch the skys, the Government finally announced that the EAGLES were missing, presumed dead. Public grief and calls for the Government to form a new association were stifled when there was no sudden rise in the crime rate. As one Government spokesperson remarked at the time, 'It's almost as if, having reduced the level of criminal activity to a point where it could be kept in check by conventional police techniques, the EAGLES chose to retire from the eye of a public which no longer needed their protection.' Certainly, by the late 1960s, the EAGLES and their good work were forgotten by all except the few people who had known them personally.

One of the first official documents to be signed by Douglas-home the new Prime minister was the D-Notice regarding the truth of the Eagles 'retirement'.

The following information is covered by D-Notice 2345
The Eagles disappearance is a mystery and cause for concern, much more than official sources will admit.

1963
A UFO is tracked entering Russia airspace over the Laptev sea, it fly’s south west and is picked up by UK radar over West Germany, the station officer in Berlin, reports that is looks like a ball of fire falling from heaven. Radar lost the object over Staffordshire, where it crashed to the fringes of a large area of forest, known as Crannock Chase. The duty officer at GCHQ made the call and the EAGLES were asked to investigate the strange object which had crashed to Earth.
First reports described it as translucent with a strange, discernible glow from within. The EAGLES' scientists, who were amongst the finest in the world, obviously thought that the meteor warranted further investigation for they transported it to their undersea base using a prototype P.1154, the super-secret EAGLES NEST. From that moment, nothing more was heard of the EAGLES, except...

Some five hours after the EAGLES had taken the object, which they had described to authorities as a meter, to their base; their prime scientist and assistant leader Protector appeared in the centre of London and started to go berserk. He didn't land in a plane, drive up in a car or even fly there under his own power. Witnesses reported that there was a shimmering in the air and Protector just stepped out, screaming. He began to demolish the surrounding buildings, apparently in a vain attempt to escape whatever he thought was pursuing him. Eventually, after he had walked through three divisions of anti-terrorist troops and caused hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage, a gas attack from a squadron of specially designed helicopters (Westland W.90’s) finally knocked him out with the aid of a unit of Stikeforce. Protector was taken to the New Bedlam institute and was put in a state of suspended animation. To remain until deemed safe. However, trapped in Suspended Animation, Protector has not aged and still thinks it is 1963.

Whatever had driven the ex-hero insane and caused his rampage must have been of immense power. Presumably, the same thing was responsible for the silence of the Eagles Nest transmitters. The governments of the world were informed and every soldier, agent or operative who stood the slightest chance against a supernormal menace was put on full alert. If the alien menace could take out the EAGLES, nowhere on Earth was safe.
The alert lasted for over a year. Eventually, when no danger materialised, it was stepped down. The Eagles Nest was quarantined; its position was erased from security tapes and the minds of lesser government officials and those immune to mind probes were sworn to secrecy. Whatever was down there, it was best left well alone. Against the threat of its eventual release, the Government started to organise new Supernormal teams but in a more clandestine manner than before. The era of the People's Hero was over.

1971
The Baker Street safety deposit box robbery, another D-Notice was issued for this. But it was not because of a royal sex scandal as is wildly believed, but the theft of a hand written book by the Former Eagle Multi-Max. Which, contains the only copy, of the final transmission of the Eagle Wing, just before it disappeared.
1985
June 85 a single transmission was heard on the same frequency the Base had been using. “Point 211 this Überseekuh x4, do you copy, Point 211 this Überseekuh x4, do you copy.. Überseekuh this is Point 211 we.” and transmission ended. Klaus, along with some handpicked volunteers, was sent to investigate. Why after 40 years of silence Point 211 had spoken.

The young Klaus took the Retrofitted U-boat he had name Scuttlebutt. And left, as the Scuttlebut dove into the ocean, two teams of superheroes hit the Bolivia base.
The Antarctic wastes.
Klaus arrived in the secret base in good time, after torpedoing the ice wall; they found a tunnel deep below the ice leading to the base’s U-Boat pens, which, were the scene of a fierce battle at least 3 rusting U-Boat hulks lay in the freezing water. The pens lead to a large cave which ended in a great bulkhead door, there were more signs of a battle and the large bulked doors were fused shut. Try as they might Klaus was unable to either open the doors or communicate with whoever was inside; he stayed 4 weeks before accepting defeat.
Burnt in to the doors was the following legend “Sealed on her Majesty’s Governments orders John Bull 1945”
Klaus returned to Bolivia. To find the base wiped out, by superheroes. So he left with the bank account details and whatever tech he could cram into the Scuttlebut and headed to Europe to begin again, slowly building a criminal empire. This, in turn, would allow him to locate the missing John Bull. Who by 85’ was becoming a myth.

2012, Now
A Legacy for the Taking
Today, years after the demise of the EAGLES, they are all but forgotten. A new generation of Super villains has arisen, but so have new heroes to fight them. At the moment the situation appears to be more or less stable with the Superheroes having the upper hand. That balance may soon be disturbed however, Overlord after years of searching has finally discovered the location of the old Eagles Base, and hopefully a key to whatever John Bull used to seal Base 211 in the Antarctic, his ultimate goal. But before he can open it other plans are afoot, The Tachyon Bomb that was being develop in secret by the UK government as an only strike weapon against hostile forces beyond the earth. And it Is being moved from its secret development base at Faslane on the River Clyde in Scotland to Project Black Knight on the Isle of White. Overlord has hired the Chameleon and Masquerade to steal the Bomb and blame it on some Supers.

better to get these level of critque now rather than sit in a bubble and deliver "the Phantom Meance" thinking i had written "Cry Freedom"

K

Apologies for not being as quick with the replies here as i'd like. I'm taking the printout of the 1st Arc with me to Maddie's gym tomorrow to have a proper read and i'll send you comments over the weekend. On to the current postings;

I have to say i'm still not comfortable with the Martian thing and a few other elements here. I think the Mars motif has been overused in other settings and I don't really see what this plot thread has to offer to the universe, other than "cute" factor. If you want alien invaders then you have the races already in the canon from Crossfire and Reunion. Maybe the problem is that I don't think steampunk sits that well with four colour superheroics. This also applies to the Clockwork Ouroboros stuff. I just don't see it fitting in this world. It needs to be more "super" for want of a better word.

I agree with Russ' comments re. the space station etc as well. I don't get the impression from the published scenarios that England is any more of a world power than it is in our own reality. There seems to be no good reason why these technological achievements would be kept secret. There seems no advantage to it, as written, other than secrecy for the sake of secrecy itself.

I hate to come over negative and that's not my intention. I'm grateful for the opportunity to hopefully make this a kick ass product.

I don't see a Neo Nazi calling a U Boat Scuttlebutt. How about Lorelei from the German folk tales? The sea witch who lures unwary mariners to their death?
